Pancake Day is a very happy day celebrated by millions of people all over the world!
It is also known as:
- Shrove Tuesday in England (from the Old English "shrive" that means to confess one's sins)
- Mardi Gras or "fat Tuesday" in the USA and Canada
- Carnival (from the Latin for "farewell to the flesh")
- Fasnacht (the Germanic "night of the fast").
Pancake Day has become associated with different traditions.
The most interesting one is "pancake race". Pancake races are held all over England where people must get to the finishing line first while tossing and flipping their pancakes into the air.
One of the most famous race takes place at Olney.
Competitors must:
1) wear an apron and a hat or scarf
2) toss a pancake at least 3 times during the race.
The tradition of pancake race dates back to 1445. There is a legend, according to which a woman of Olney heard the shriving bell while she was making pancakes and ran to the church in her apron, still clutching her frying pan.
